The drummer might want to go faster, and the bass player must try to hold him back. Or sometimes the bass player might be pushing the beat, pulling the drummer along into a faster tempo. At times these tensions can produce something cool, but usually they just create extra work and diminish the joy of playing. And then sometimes everybody finds a nice easy groove that they can all feel comfortable in. The groove is what you want.
